Central’s labyrinth is patterned after the Chartres Labyrinth in France. The design is represenative of the Christian faith. The circle is the symbol for wholeness and unity. The path itself represents creation. The six-petal rose shaped design is symbolic of the Virgin Mary, who represents the simple acceptance of God’s love for the world.
The labyrinth dates back to early Christian times. Sometimes it is confused with a maze. A maze has many paths but the labyrinth has only one path leading into the center and back out.
There are three parts to walking the labyrinth: 1) walking towards the center; 2) being in the center; and 3) walking back out. There is no right way or wrong way to walk. What happens happens between you and God. Simple ideas may come to mind as you walk. Or not. If nothing comes to mind, you are being blessed with peace.
One idea is to walk in asking God to unburden you. While in the center allow God to give you gifts God intends for you. On the way out, walk toward the future with a spirit of new life. You may choose to walk with scripture or poetry in mind. The labyrinth can help give us a greater sense of spiritual connection. It is a tool for prayer and meditation.
Why use a labyrinth? It facilitates movement. You can face whatever you need to face there. It is not about doctrine or about healing. It is about self clarity. Where is Jesus in the labyrinth? Jesus dwells within you. You walk with Jesus on the path. Often Jesus is found in the center.
